Namakan Basin Update – Chairman Nevalainen gave a brief update of the board meeting held on July 23, 2009 in Cook. The minutes from this Namakan Basin board meeting have been posted on the Kabetogama Township web site under Advisory Committees.
Roads & Trails –The hiking trail has been mowed by Greg House. A resident from State Point road requested that the sides of State Point road be mowed. The township currently has no means of taking care of the problem. St. Louis County has stated that they will not mow along township roads any longer. Town Hall report – Sande Moyer gave a report on the current status of the agreement with ARDC. She brought a copy of the Iron Range Resources Application Fund Request. ARDC personal will fill out this application. Supervisor Town moved to allow Chairman Nevalainen to sign the contract from the ARDC upon review of the township supervisors. Seconded by Chairman Nevalainen, motion carried. The contract is to assist the township in seeking funding for a new community center by identifying grants, loans and other possible sources and working with the township to apply to those sources.
Walleye Beautification updates – Marlene Tomczak gave this report. Greg House will use his cat to move materials (rock, wood chips) from his site to the area around the walleye. Volunteers will help to spread this material.
New Business – Speakers – Superintendent of VNP, Mike Ward and District Ranger Chuck Remus of VNP gave updates on current projects being done in the park. Project updates – Tour Boat will be arriving this month and on the 26th of this month there will be a kick-off with Congressman Oberstar attending. Mr. Ward is attending a meeting on Thursday in Minneapolis to hopefully finalize the deal for the new headquarters in I’Falls. There has been interest from the Crane Lake area about creating a visitors center there. They are still waiting on a contractor to fill the order for bear lockers. Their previous vendor discontinued making this product. Mr. Remus stated he will be in contact with Fire Chief Larry Warrington to discuss the dry hydrant that Kabetogama Fire Dept wished to have installed in the park. The township asked if the weather radio tower that is installed behind the Kabetogama fire hall can be removed to make room for a heli pad. Mr. Remus will get back to the township about this matter. Many camp sites day use sites and docks are being renovated in the park. The Township board thanked Mr. Ward and Mr. Remus for attending the meeting.
Bill Arthur of Orr, MN brought information to the board on the Comprehensive Plan currently being revised in Orr and invited the Township to participate. Many of the surrounding area townships have already committed to joining in on this program. Some of the benefits that our township could possibly see from this Comprehensive Plan is the ability to use the County and State’s GIS maps and also to gain better knowledge on hooking up to the newest fiber optics that have been installed or will be installed. More information will be posted on this as information becomes available. These workshops will be held between January and April. There will be four, two day workshops. The Kabetogama Township board showed interest in joining in on this project. Mr. Arthur will be sending letters out with more information. The Board thanked Mr. Arthur for attending our meeting and asking us to become a part of this planning process. Chairman Nevalainen moved to accept the following claims, seconded by Supervisor Town, motion carried.
Chairman Nevalainen moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:28 pm, seconded by Supervisor Town, motion carried.
Respectfully Submitted,
Mary Manninen, Clerk Kabetogama Township
